I have been meaning to do a grocery post for a long time. Finally, I made a trip where I had to buy a bunch of pantry staples so I have more of what I typically buy to show you than just a pile of vegetables.
I buy about 80% or more of the edible groceries for our household from a local “farmers market” called Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market. I say “farmer’s market” in quotations because it’s really not one, it’s more of an international foods warehouse.
Most of the foods there are drastically cheaper than you would find in chain grocery stores. They have an unbelievable selection of produce as well as quality meats and fish and bulk items.
Here’s what I picked up for just $75!….
- A huge bottle of fish sauce (I’ll definitely go through it!)
- Rice vinegar
- Mirin
- One bag of jasmine rice
- Two bags of sushi rice (You wouldn’t believe how quickly we’ll go through this)
- A block of parmesan
- Firm tofu
- Honey and Lemon Chobani yogurt (OMG I should combine those sometime!)
- A dozen eggs
And the produce…
- Scallions
- Yo choy sum (Like bok choy but less bitter, I put it in stir-frys)
- Thai basil
- Onions
- Tomatoes (The first I’ve bought of the season! I hope they’re ready)
- Avocados
- Shiitake mushrooms
- A pineapple
- Bananas
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- A carton of strawberries (I’m gonna try not to eat them all in one sitting)
Not shown……..a pound of ground pork, 4 large beef short ribs, whole wheat pizza dough.
Can you believe all that is $75!? The mirin there is a full $2 cheaper than I’ve seen it anywhere else. Those bags of rice are around $1 each, crazy!
I usually shop at Kroger for all of our non-edibles and for a few things like Jeff’s preferred brand of oatmeal and my Larabar habit. I hit up Whole Foods about once a month or even less to stock up on “special items” that I don’t keep around all the time, like kombucha and coconut water.
Where do you do your grocery shopping?
They have pizza dough there? Where is it?
I would say that I do 70% of my shopping at Kroger or Publix, 15% at the farmer’s market and 15% at Trader Joe’s. There’s a WF near my office so I sometimes get the salad bar for lunch and will pick up a few things but I don’t generally grocery shop there.

It’s on the top shelf above the pre-made pizzas, there’s a giant pole in the way obscuring it but it’s there. I don’t buy the pre-made ones because the sauce they use is so oily and salty. I love the flavor of the whole wheat pizza crust though!
I love grocery shopping hehe. I usually go to Shaw’s or Stop and Shop because they’re closest to my apartment, but also I hit up Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s has the best snacks, and affordable cheese!
I saw that place on a PBS special about grocery stores! It looks really interesting – and super cheap! For $75, about how long will that stuff last the two of you? I spend way too much on groceries. I love seeing posts like this, too. I almost did one tonight but wanted to just get my stuff away.
The tomatoes look good – hope they are!

It’s hard to say, usually a trip like this can get us anywhere from 1 week to 2. I buy most of the same stuff every time I go and it’s almost always around $85, this one was cheaper because I didn’t buy as much meat.
Oh, Chobani! I miss American-style greek yoghurts Sadly, I do most of my shopping at the bog-standard local supermarket. The farmers market is a 40 minute drive away, and I’d have to leave too early to beat the crush 😛

DeKalb Farmer’s Market is a gift from god. I bought everything there for the baby shower I threw and only spent $100!
