I haven’t blogged about my eats in a loooooong time. I really wanna get this blog back on track with discussing food and sharing recipes, so without further ado, I present to you…my lunch. Thrilling, I know.
But I was certainly thrilled to come across a big glorious pile of heirloom tomatoes at Whole Foods yesterday, all piled up like jewels in a treasure chest. The colors, patterns, and irregular shapes are a feast for the eyes. I especially love the ones with lots of ridges and pleats, like a shiny swatch of silk tucked and pinned around a soft globe.
I sliced up one of the purple-tinted ones over a tartine of smashed avocado sprinkled with dulse flakes. I like to say tartine because it sounds fancier than open-faced sandwich. 😉
I salted the tops and cracked over some black pepper and served them with a donut peach and kombucha. I know it looks small, but I tend to eat lunch in two phases. I’ll probably have some goat’s milk yogurt with peanut butter protein granola later.
OMG these tomatoes are so good! And this is coming from someone who typically does not enjoy raw tomatoes. But these are so sweet and juicy that I’m reminded that tomatoes are actually a fruit. And they’re not mealy or watery like so many tomatoes are. Totally worth the Whole Foods price tag.
Have you ever had an heirloom tomato?
Are there and veggies you can only eat cooked/don’t enjoy raw?
I LOVE heirloom tomatoes. There are probably some maturing quite nicely in our Atlanta backyard, too bad we don’t live there. This is my kind of lunch, simple and really highlighting the natural flavors!

Ooo…I wanna go over there and steal ’em!
These are my favorite! I got some amazing ones at the Piedmont Green Market last weekend. I read that produce is especially sweet this season due to the extreme heat – I believe it!

At least this searing heat is good for something!
I need some tomatoes like that. Yum.
I don’t particularly like raw broccoli, but love it cooked. Not a huge fan of cooked carrots, though I like them raw.

Huh, I’m the opposite. Love raw broccoli, hate raw carrots.
Those tomatoes look fantastic.

Whole Foods you say? Like the kind I can and will shop at NOW THAT I’M IN NEW YORK?
Yes, that Whole Foods.
I never grew up eating tomatoes much because of mum’s allergies, but for a time I used to eat them raw like an apple.
And now I can do so IN NEW YORK.
xo
Well, I doubt a New York tomato is better than an Atlanta tomato. You’ll just have to find out, won’t you?

Our first tomatoes are finally turning red! I’m so excited about it, I run out to look at them every morning! Aww.
Beautiful tartine, dahhhling;)

That tartine does look scrumptious but you know there are only 3 foods that I don’t like raw……1. onions 2.tomatoes and 3.bananas. I eat tomatoes in my salad all the time but they have to be covered in salad dressing. I can eat onions grilled, roasted, baked and cooked in sauces just can’t stand them raw and I dispise bananas.
Heirloom tomatoes??
They sound great, particularly the way Alayna presents them to us.
I wish we had those many food choices in India. I am a great lover of veggies and fruits though I will not deny enjoying non vegetarian fare as well.
Do they have more nutritional value than the normal, regular tomatoes we use?
